After a relaxed and refreshing ‘day off’ in Huancavelica, we were eager to get going again. We hit the road at 9:00, filled up on gas and were on our way. For the coming day we would be following a ‘bikepacking’ route that I discovered while researching for the trip.

For today’s post I’m going to keep is very brief and let the pictures do the talking. The ride in the morning from Seccla was wet, but absolutely spectacular. We rode for two hours on a single lane paved road that peaked at almost 15,000 feet and would rival the best that the alps have to offer with the added benefit of there being little or no traffic.

Today was a fairly low key day relative to the past few days of riding. Our goal for the day was to get to the other side of the major city of Ayucucho on the main ‘3S’ route that runs through this part of Peru. We also had a few errands we wanted to take care of in Ayucucho. Neither of us was particularly looking forward to the prospect of making our way in and around the city, but there was no avoiding it.

Day 4 was a tale of three ‘cities’, to borrow from Dickens’s. There was the morning ‘Climb’, the mid-day ‘Brutale’ and the end of the day ‘Glide’. Ok, so my literary skills are pretty lacking, but you get the picture. Anyways, as you may recall, we camped out near a bridge at the end of Day 3. One of our criteria had been, ‘is it buggy?’… and as we set up camp that night we found that it wasn’t, but in the morning…oh my! We got eaten alive by “Manta Blanca”… remember that name. If you ever hear that name, run for cover.

“Incredible”, ”Amazing”, ”Epic” … pick your superlative and that was day 3. Pick from your best, most memorable days skiing, hiking, biking, surfing, and you have a sense of it. Spectacular scenery together with incredible riding from star to finish combined with a true sense of adventure and a deep sense of satisfaction.

Great day! Day 2 was our first full day and we had a great time. Incredible riding throughout the day. Windy paved roads and a long extended stretch on dirt. In the end we only covered 185KM (135 or so miles), but given the roads we were on that was plenty. We started at 9:00 in sunshine and ended at 4:00 in a downpour. From a directional standpoint we made our way north a bit and then ran pretty much due west.

Day 1 is under our belt. Not a whole lot to report as the better part of the day was spent setting up the bikes and taking care of last minute items in Cusco. Long and short, we didn’t actually start riding until around 3:30. We rode for about 2.5 hours (and 50 miles) and made our goal of getting to the city of Urubamba.
