Day 1

Despite the short duration, it felt good to get on the bikes and start moving. Our first impressions of the bikes is that they will be ideal for the riding we expect to do. They are light weight 300cc Honda’s. They are quite comfortable and very easy to ride even if they are a bit underpowered (particularly at the altitudes we’ll be seeing). While we’re on the topic, the altitude really hit me hard. Cusco is at 11,000 plus and I had a rough night’s sleep last night. Felt better today and am taking an altitude medication that seems to be working, but boy did I feel it yesterday upon arrival.

I suppose the real significance of the day is that after months of planning and preparation, the journey has begun. Neither of us is really sure what to expect of Peru. We’re certain that we are going to see some incredible landscapes, but as far as road conditions, weather, accommodations, food and culture we’re not sure what to expect. That said, we are excited to be here (finally!) and our hopes are high on all counts. That’s really all there is to say regarding day 1. Tomorrow should be a much more interesting day as it will be our first full day of riding and the route we have planned looks to be both challenging and exciting. I took a few photos that you can check out below. Otherwise.. Stay tuned!!

  1. Hey Fred. ,
Looks like you guys are already getting into some incredible views. What a thrill. Altitude and water intake critical co-factors.
You have inspired me. Bob and I may do a local ride Thursday, Today I’ll get the rust and dust off my rig and charge up my helmet. Rubber side down.
