Day 3

“Incredible”, ”Amazing”, ”Epic” … pick your superlative and that was day 3. Pick from your best, most memorable days skiing, hiking, biking, surfing, and you have a sense of it. Spectacular scenery together with incredible riding from star to finish combined with a true sense of adventure and a deep sense of satisfaction.

It was also a bit sobering, in the sense that we discovered what it means to ride deep in the mountains of Peru. When we started the day, our plan was to complete the route we’d started on day 2. When we looked at the map, we said to ourselves ‘no problem, looks doable. Maybe we got a little ahead of ourselves the day before, but we’ll get an early start and we’ll make it no problemo’. Wrong! Long and short, by the end of the day, in which we rode a solid 8 hours, we were still 4 hours short of our destination and ended up having to camp out for the night. Given the day we had otherwise, we weren’t complaining… far from it… but we now have a reference point for trip moving forward.

I’m otherwise going to keep my comments brief. As it is this post is a day late, (I’m sure you’ve all been waiting with baited breath 🙂 ) and I’ve been fighting technology last night and this morning (the final insult being that the batteries in my fancy iPad keyboard died and so I’m typing this with my two index fingers!!!!). Hopefully the photo’s and the video’s will do some justice to the day.

Before I sign off, I want to thank those who have offered comments. They are much appreciated.

NOTE: for For those so inclined you will find ‘Bonus Footage’ at the bottom of the page… there are two GoPro video’s one is an extended video that captures the upper part of the ascent we made early in the day and the other is an extended segment from later in the day. watch as much or as little as can bear :).

    1. That’s a wall. Took another picture of one that I included in my post for Day 5. They’re pretty amazing… no mortar or anything holding them together and as you’ll see from the Day 5 photo they are incredibly long… can’t imagine the time and effort that went into constructing them.

  2. My reaction as I watched the “Relive” app recap of your day, “WHOA!” What an incredible route. These roads are insane and seem like they never quit! How are the bikes performing considering the altitude? Next time you camp, give us a photo of Chateau Greybeard and your camp setup. Also, how much Trader Joes chocolate are you carrying? Does the Milky Way Midnight distribution network reach into the mountains of Peru? How many roadside naps were taken this day? Inquiring minds want to know.

    1. Hey… thanks for following and for the comments. You would NOT believe the riding here Jake. It is non-stop amazing. The paved roads are almost as good as the dirt (check out the latest post Day 6 to see the single lane paved road we were on yesterday… it was amazing!!!. At altitude the bikes are pretty weak. You really have to ring their necks to get anything out of them, but they red line at 9,000 and so you can wind them up pretty good. Trust you saw the pic of the camp set up I posted, but will make a point of documenting better next time around. As for Trader Joe’s chocolate… I started with three packs and am down to my last one!!! LOL. No Milky Way Midnite’s much to my chagrin and no roadside naps so far, but it’s still early. Thanks again for for following. Trust the job is going well for you. Say “Hey” to Janine and Birdy for me.

    1. Oops hit ‘send’ by accident…. Anyways, after the initial period of adjustment it hasn’t been too bad. No more headaches like the first night. You are definitely going to want to take the altitude pills in Lima the day before you head to Cusco. Otherwise, hope all is well with you.
